Do You Like Bizarre Movies? Here’s 3 to Watch This Weekend
A bizarre movie can be just what you need sometimes. Just because a movie is bizarre does not mean it's bad. Here are three to consider watching this weekend.
1. "Moonfall"
"Moonfall" was released in February of 2022, starring Halle Berry (Jocinda Fowler), Patrick Wilson (Brian Harper), and John Bradley (K.C. Houseman). Going into it blind, it starts normally. It's a space movie, but it soon becomes clear that this is sci-fi in an incredibly shocking way.
This movie is about the moon getting knocked out of its orbit, sending it into one that slowly closes in around Earth. The moon is falling. There are several surprising twists and turns, including the one you probably saw coming, but is just bizarre enough to be as surprising as the rest.
By the end, you may be wondering what happened and if the movie was actually good. Maybe it was so bad it's good. With a 5.2/10 on IMDB and a 38% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, you may be leaning towards so bad it's good, but the audience score is 70%. The consensus is that it's a good movie not to think too much into, while still having a good time watching.
2. "Treading Water"
To start, this movie's original title was "The Boy Who Smells Like Fish." This 2015 dramedy stars Douglas Smith (Mica) and Zoë Kravitz (Laura). As the original title states, Mica has a problem where he smells like fish.
This movie is a comedic coming-of-age movie story about a boy who smells like fish and a girl who doesn't seem to care. Mica's house doubles as a museum for the famous musician Guillermo Garibai, played by the late Gonzalo Vega, which is just one strange aspect of Mica's life. Surprisingly, Guillermo plays an impactful role in Mica's story. Of course, the usual miscommunication plot happens, but it is resolved humorously. The movie ends with an interesting musical number from Guillermo.
"Treading Water" scored a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 52% audience score and a 6/10 on IMDB. You may find the hilarity of the plot makes up for any holes in it, or you may find the sweet story of a boy finding acceptance is what does it. Whether you are in it for the romance or the comedy, this movie is undeniably bizarre.
3. "Into the Dark: Good Boy"
"Into the Dark: Good Boy" from 2020 stars Judy Greer as Maggie in this tale about a sad 39-year-old woman getting an emotional support dog.
When Maggie's boss demotes her, he recommends that she get an emotional support dog. She follows this suggestion, and in comes Reuben, an adorable little dog, but there is more to him than meets the eye. That's when things get interesting as people around Maggie start dying. While this movie lies somewhere between horror or thriller and comedy, there's no denying that just the premise is incredibly wacky. There is a very full-circle ending, which opens up the possibility of a sequel.
It wasn't well-received, though. It earned a 6.2/10 on IMDB with no rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Like the rest of the "Into the Dark" episodes, this movie is set around a holiday, that being Pet Appreciation Week, and it may just make you appreciate your pets by the end.
Any of these three movies should make for a bizarre movie night, whether you like disaster movies, love stories, or horror movies that make you love your pets just a little more.
